As part of this year's European Green Week, on June 6th, on the plateau of the Pirot Regional Landfill, probably the most modern facility of this type in Serbia, this important event was marked, with the presence of representatives of all four municipalities within the Project for Waste Separation “, as well as pupils of primary and secondary schools of the Pirot region. An educational tour of the landfill was organized to promote the priority of preserving a healthy environment and waste separation.
The Director of the Pirot Regional Landfill, Nebojša Ivanov, while reminding that the City of Pirot is a leader when it comes to efforts to preserve a healthy environment through the systems of primary and secondary waste selection, which have already started, said that the goal of this promotion was to indicate the only acceptable way of waste treatment, as it was being done in the European Union."The European Union is the leader in waste management in the world, and they have the most complex legislation that regulates this area, and Pirot is the leader in waste management on the territory of Serbia, considering the implementation of a large number of projects in this area," said director Ivanov.
The President of the City Assembly of Pirot, Milena Dimitrijević, said at the opening of this ceremony that the goal was to present the results of numerous projects that had been launched in Pirot."The primary selection of waste in Pirot has come to life, our fellow citizens have accepted this novelty, and the data on the amount of waste that is treated in this way is evidence of that. The results confirm that we are also the best in Serbia in that respect," said President Dimitrijević.
Bojan Pešić, Head of The Urban Planning Department of the City of Pirot, said that he was especially glad to be able to welcome the youngest fellow citizens of the Pirot, who had the opportunity to see and get to know the work of this facility of the Pirot Regional Landfill."This is a facility that, since 2006, has been a part of projects financed by the European Union, everything you see here was financed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the City of Pirot, and especially by the European Union," added Bojan Pešić.
In addition to Pirot, three more municipalities of this region are included in this project - Babušnica, Dimitrovgrad and Bela Palanka.
The project "O-DVA-JA-MO" is implemented in 17 municipalities in Serbia with the support of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of the Republic of Serbia, the European Union and the Embassy of Sweden. The goal of the project is to recycle part of the waste generated in households, in order to reduce the amount that ends up in landfills and increase the recycling rate in these municipalities to 15%.
The Waste Management Program in Serbia 2022-2031, adopted by the Government of Serbia as part of EU accession, aims to improve the municipal waste management system through an increased recycling rate, reduced disposal of biodegradable waste in landfills and reduced disposal of waste in unhygienic landfills.
